SQ 19 Honored for Saving a Life
On Monday June 27, 2005 members of stations 17, 18, and 19 received a commendation for saving the life of a 22 year old man who collapsed during a basketball game. The 23 year old suffered sudden cardiac arrest while playing a game of basketball and bystanders began CPR and called 911. The first to arrive was E17B who applied the AED (automatic external defibrillator) and shocked the patient once before the squad arrived. Paramedic Tony Dauphine and EMT Chris Sillman on SQ19 continued ALS treatment, shocking the patient two more times before a normal heart rhythm returned. A18 transported the patient to the hospital where a full recovery was expected. Present at the award ceremony held at station 17 was the HFD Fire Chief, HFD Medical Director, EMS support staff, the local media, the patient, his friend, his mother and several family members.
